Remembering our Friend and Founder, Paul L. Newman

Saturday, September 26, marks the one year anniversary of the passing of our Founder Paul Newman. While we miss our friend and leader, his inspiring philanthropic legacy lives on through the work of the Newman’s Own Foundation.

Paul was a Hollywood star of extraordinary celebrity, a talented race car driver, and a passionate philanthropist, but he lived his life as an ordinary person, which he always considered himself. He was a man of abundant good humor, generosity, and humility.

Paul was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. He quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance and used his influence, committed his financial resources, and personally volunteered to advance many social causes around the world. He accomplished this with an uncanny ability to break new ground. His heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place.

While Paul’s philanthropic donations were wide-ranging, he was especially committed to the thousands of children with life-threatening conditions served by the Hole in the Wall Camps, which he founded in 1988. Paul envisioned the Camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back, and “raise a little hell.”

Today, Newman’s Own Foundation and his food business, Newman’s Own, Inc., are powerful and lasting expressions of Paul’s legacy and serve as inspiration and reflections of the best of American entrepreneurial and civic spirit.

Newman’s Own Foundation is humbled to announce that in the year since Paul’s passing, we continue his legacy and have made $28 million in new grants and pledges to hundreds of charities around the world – the highest amount since Newman’s Own, Inc., began in 1982. We are committed to honoring the spirit, values and philosophy of our Founder, Paul Newman, who touched the lives of many people with his warm heart.
