“The lead funding by Newman’s Own Foundation in support of the South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund was critical to the success of the public/private sector initiative because it triggered significant responses from other corporations to support relief and reconstruction efforts in the ravaged and remote villages of Pakistan — one of the United States’ strongest international allies in the War on Terror.″

— Sanford I. Weill, SAERF Advisory Committee

About South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund

Following the October 8, 2005, earthquake that rocked the mountainous regions of South Asia and killing approximately 74,000 people and injuring over 70,000, the South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund (SAERF) was created, forging a powerful collaboration among corporations, government entities, and nonprofit organizations to provide a sustainable and humanitarian response. In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, President George W. Bush took the unprecedented step of engaging the private sector to help raise awareness and encourage donations to aid the survivors of this disaster.  After nearly three years of serving as a replicable model for comprehensive disaster response and successfully providing millions of dollars in relief and rebuilding efforts, SAERF — the first public-private partnership of its kind — was closed on August 31, 2008
